If one of Ms. Jacqui's Spanish students finds him or herself having an "ayudame!" moment, they know where to go: Ms. Jacqui has enlisted the assistance of Bre'onna Bingham and Cheyenne Hart as peer tutors to complement her own outside-of-class availability.
The two students (described by their profesora as all-star Spanish students) are "essentially working for me and with me," says Both 12th graders, Bre'onna and Cheyenne have each taken on a roster of several "clients" who they tutor on a weekly or biweekly basis after school or during lunch. Interested students can receive assistance with their Spanish homework or prepare for an assessment.
Ms. Jacqui's two peer tutors can also simply serve as "a person to speak Spanish with," a resource that, as anyone who's ever tried to master a foreign tongue knows, can be invaluable. "It's working out really well," Ms. Jacqui notes. "So many more students than able to help [by myself] are receiving the extra, one-on-one attention they need and deserve."
